Review: First two books in the Dominion of the Fallen

Books: House of Shattered Wings, House of Binding Thorns.
Author: Aliette De Bodard
Genere: Historical Fantasy, Gothic.

Synopsis: House of Shattered Wings: In this introduction to the Dominion of the Fallen series we are introduced to a Paris filled with ruin, due to a war between the houses. These houses are ruled by fallen angels, who have a great attitude and power in magick. The house known as Silverspires lost their leader Morningstar (Lucifer) some time ago.
While rummaging through the trap-laden ruins in Paris, Phillipe and his fellow vagabonds stumble on a newly Fallen Angel. This leads him to painful memories and his own history as well. In the end, he overcomes it and sets on his own path once again.

Phillipe is a great character, not a native of Paris but from Vietnam, and is written with such care that the history and culture were represented by him as a strong character. Not to mention the wise aunts did bring some humor to the book.

Hosue of Binding Thorns: At the end of Shattered Wings Madilen (who I thought would be a side character is the main focus of this book) We find her history with House Hawthorn and the new leadership brought by a rebellion by Asmodeus who was introduced to us in Shattered Wings. If you want a Bond Villan as a fallen angel, look no further. He is just as cunning and as he is ruthless, kind to those who are loyal. I think that is what makes him the bad boy you love to hate.

Madeline has her own inner demons to deal with, and addiction is one of them. To kill the pain of her loss and injuries. She does shine on her own here and overcomes them to find a greater purpose. Phillipe does show up in this book as well, and he finds what he is after as well.

I personally can't wait for Book 3 which is coming out soon, these books are a fantastic read and I do recommend them to several readers who I run in to.

RATING: READ IT NOW!!
